On the weekend of November 6th, Propel ICT and BDC joined forces to kick off our inaugural Alumni Event. Held at the beautiful Riverside Resort & Conference Centre just outside of Fredericton, New Brunswick, the event brought together Propel alumni from around Canada. Exposure, introductions and connections to other regions are crucial for the development of momentum and the success of any startup business – and this is especially true for Atlantic Canada’s startups. Our first Alumni event provided an inspiring, enjoyable and relaxed way to connect our alumni with influencers and with additional programs that can help advance their businesses forward.
Besides the fact that it was held in beautiful New Brunswick where Propel ICT originated, this event brought over 20 different alumni companies – representing each of the past 6 cohorts – together with 10 insightful and thoughtful guest speakers. As a result of this dynamic mixture, discussions over the weekend were lively and engaging. These included David Alward discussing the opportunities in Boston through the CTA, and Marcus Daniels speaking on the themes of connecting and expanding, and how Highline and Propel can team up to build the foundation for a soft landing for alumni who relocate to Toronto and Vancouver. Kendra McDonald gave us an insight on Deloitte Global Trends and opportunities as they can be understood from an Atlantic Canada perspective.
We’re happy to say that the feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive. This is just a beginning though, and we know there’s lots of room for improvement and growth.
We want to continue to build a rich, sustainable and powerful alumni network.
Based on the discussions that happened over the weekend, we’re looking at ways to improve communication and connections among our alumni – this includes everything from helping them to share ideas, to relating relevant experiences and giving our alumni the tools they need to explore their ideas together. We also want to help our alumni to coordinate with one another and identify available avenues for expansion beyond the region through events, introductions, co-working spaces and more.
Stay tuned for more follow-up in the coming months.
Propel ICT would like to express a sincere thank you to BDC and Nicole LeBlanc especially for her support in making this Inaugural Alumni Event possible.
